From everything I can find, the name “Amish” is just added to the recipe to give it color. Certainly the idea that you make a dessert from scratch and that you share a recipe and starter with friends is becoming quaint in our modern world. Maybe that’s why the “Amish” part seems to resonate: you can imagine horse and buggy people making this bread and dropping by a neighbor’s house to share the bounty.
First, here is the Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipe. Note, as with any sourdough, avoid using metal spoons or bowls.
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup warm milk
1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water for 10 minutes.
2. In a 2 quart glass or plastic container, combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Use a whisk to mix thoroughly.
3. Slowly add warm milk and dissolved yeast mixture to the flour/sugar combo. Cover the mixture with a towel.
4. Plan on stirring the starter every day and feeding the starter every 5 days. When you feed it, add 1 cup each of flour, sugar and milk.
I like a 5-day baking cycle. The traditional friendship bread has a 10-day cycle that you’d think was set in stone. It is perfectly OK to bake the bread more often. I like to take a cup of the starter for my one loaf recipe before I feed the starter. Also, please note that it is OK to cut your starter amounts in half. I tend not to share my “friendship” bread (is that mean?) so I feed my starter with 1/2 cup of flour, sugar and milk.
When you are ready to bake, put one cup of starter in your mixing bowl.

1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
You can add nuts or raisins or other fruit to the batter.
Pour the batter into two greased loaf pans and bake at 325 degrees for 40 minutes. When a knife comes out clean, you know it is done.
